Common Questions From Students

What people actually ask before joining a tabla class

1:1

What are 1:1 tabla classes?

One-on-one sessions with a dedicated guru, scheduled around your time zone. You set the pace, the guru corrects your hand position and bol pronunciation in real time, and your riyaz plan is built specifically for your current level — not a fixed group syllabus.

रि

What is the Riyaz Program?

Riyaz means disciplined daily practice. Our Riyaz Program is a structured 3-month intensive for students who want rapid, serious progress — combining theory, laya (tempo) training, and guided daily practice targets reviewed by your guru each week.

🎭

What is Group Performance training?

Group classes where students learn ensemble timing, accompany vocalists and other instrumentalists, and build stage confidence through periodic recitals — ideal if your goal is performing live rather than playing solo.

My time at the Baba School of Music was the highlight of my visit to India. Ravi was welcoming and accommodating with two intro lessons (tablas and harmonium) during my weeklong visit to Varanasi. He is a great teacher and incredible player. He organized another lesson with another teacher who was also very professional and strong. I hope to spend more time together in the future.

We have requested Ravi and his school several times for online music lessons. While traveling in Varanasi, we decided to take more music lessons for a week—singing for me and tabla for my partner. We highly recommend Ravi and his team. They are very attentive, welcoming, available and flexible. It's a serious and highly competent school.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Learning Tabla

How long does it take to learn tabla?
With consistent 20-30 minutes of daily riyaz, most students play their first taal (Kaharwa or Teentaal) confidently within 4-6 weeks. Reaching an intermediate performance level — playing kaidas, relas and accompanying a vocalist — usually takes 12-24 months. Mastery, like in any Indian classical art, is a lifelong journey.
Do I need to own a tabla before joining classes?
No. You can start your first 2-3 classes on a practice pad or even on your lap to learn finger technique. We'll then help you order a properly tuned tabla — either locally or shipped from our Varanasi workshop, custom-tuned to the pitch your guru recommends.
Are online tabla classes really effective?
Yes. Our online 1:1 classes on Zoom are designed for tabla specifically — camera angle on hands, audio settings tuned for percussion, written bols shared in real time, and recordings of every class. Hundreds of our students across the US, UK, Europe and the Gulf have reached performance level entirely online.
Do you provide a certificate?
Yes. Our free 7-day starter course includes a free completion certificate. Paid courses (Foundations, 1:1, Performance) include level-wise certificates from Baba School of Music, and we also prepare students for recognised Indian exam boards like Prayag Sangit Samiti.
Can children and complete beginners join?
Absolutely. We teach children from age 6, complete adult beginners, working professionals and foreigners with no exposure to Indian music. The first class is always a free trial so the student and the guru can decide together if it's a good fit.
Can I buy a tabla from you and get it shipped abroad?
Yes. We custom-tune tablas to your preferred pitch and hand size, pack them in padded gig-bag boxes, and ship worldwide. After delivery, your guru does a free tuning & setup video call so the instrument is ready to play.
