The classical string training at Baba School of Music Varanasi was highly recommended by my peers. Learning how to properly strike the Sarod and glide on its polished fingerboard directly on the banks of the Ganges was a profound, life-changing experience.

My time at the Baba School of Music was the highlight of my visit to India. Ravi was welcoming and accommodating with two intro lessons (tablas and harmonium) during my weeklong visit to Varanasi. He is a great teacher and incredible player. He organized another lesson with another teacher who was also very professional and strong. I hope to spend more time together in the future.

We have requested Ravi and his school several times for online music lessons. While traveling in Varanasi, we decided to take more music lessons for a weekβ€”singing for me and tabla for my partner. We highly recommend Ravi and his team. They are very attentive, welcoming, available and flexible. It's a serious and highly competent school.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Learning Sitar

How long does it take to learn sitar?
With a consistent 20-30 minutes of daily riyaz, most beginners play their first basic raga scale and simple composition confidently within 6-8 weeks. Reaching an intermediate performance level β€” sliding meends smoothly, playing basic jhala, and executing clean tan patterns β€” typically takes 18-24 months. Classical sitar is a highly expressive, deep stringed art, making mastery a rewarding lifelong journey.
Do I need to own a sitar before joining classes?
No. You can take your first 2-3 introductory sessions focusing on scale theory, finger positioning, and stroke work without owning an instrument. We will then help you select and purchase a properly structured sitar from our Varanasi workshop, custom-tailored to your hands and safely shipped directly to you.
Are online sitar classes really effective?
Yes. Our online 1:1 classes on Zoom are fully customized for stringed performance. We employ strategic camera angles on both the fretting neck and the plucking hand, utilize precise audio filters designed to capture pure acoustic resonance, share real-time notations, and provide full class recordings for your home practice.
Do you provide a certificate?
Yes. Our free 7-day starter course includes a free digital completion certificate. Paid courses (Foundations, 1:1, Riyaz, and Performance) include structured level-wise certification from Baba School of Music, and we also prepare students for recognized board examinations such as Prayag Sangit Samiti.
What style of sitar do you teach?
We teach both major traditional playing styles: the Ravi Shankar style (Kharaj-Pancham) utilizing a deep, resonant bass register with an extra bass string, and the Vilayat Khan style (Gandhar-Pancham) which features a lighter neck configured for rapid melodic speed and intricate vocal-imitation (gayaki) phrasings.
Can I buy a sitar from you and get it shipped abroad safely?
Yes. We build custom sitars from premium seasoned tun wood, cure natural pumpkin gourds, pack them securely in custom-fitted shockproof flight cases, and ship internationally with tracking. After arrival, your guru provides a free, dedicated setup video call to help you tune and adjust your new instrument.
